Editor's Letter: Winter 2009

Instead of fretting about holiday pressure, turn to the experts.

By Ceri Marsh

One year, I got smart and started buying Christmas gifts in October. Each week, I’d move down my list and find something for the next person on it—and because I was thinking of just one friend at a time, each present ended up being something inspired, or at the very least appropriate. By early December, I was done. Everything was wrapped, in the post or hand-delivered, leaving me time to actually enjoy the holidays rather than spend them in a flurry of overspending. Of course, I’ve never managed to repeat it.

This year, instead of fretting about holiday pressure—it’s so unattractive to complain: Poor me, too many parties, too many friends—I’ve turned to the experts. We’ve put together this issue with the goal of making the season as simple yet stylish as possible. Fashion market editor Sarah Casselman’s gift guide is a thing to behold—there’s something for every friend, hostess, pet lover and toddler you know. But I think men are the toughest to buy for, don’t you? So, for the first time, we’ve dedicated a special gift guide to the guys.

We asked our friends down the hall at Wish magazine to spill their most stylish secrets for our entertaining special. Using runway looks as inspiration, editors Tory Healy, Laurie Jennings and Andrea Mills created four chic—not fussy—parties. Nothing’s less inviting than a hostess who’s so worried about getting everything perfect that she runs out of time to enjoy her guests’ company.

As an extra gift to you, this issue also features “Shop Like a Fashion Editor.” Being able to rely on the style advice of the fashion team is definitely the biggest perk of working here, and reading SLFE is just like browsing the stores with them (and there’s even more on-line). Let me know how you will make your holidays memorable. I love to get your letters, write to me at letters@fashionmagazine.com.
