Editor's Letter: March 2009

For our March issue, we found inspiration in an unexpected place.

You never know where inspiration is going to come from. When the editors of FASHION come back from the international shows, I usually hear them talk about futurism, romance, architecture and other iconic fashion tropes. I wasn’t expecting the conversation I had with our fashion director, Susie Sheffman, upon her return from Milan last September. “I can’t stop thinking about Overboard!” You remember Overboard, don’t you? That quintessential ’80s chick flick with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. “Hmm …. Really?!” I asked. That weekend, I got a text from Susie: “It’s on TV right now!” I was already watching. And, sure enough, Goldie’s wardrobe did contain all the extremes we saw on the Spring ’09 runways. Louis Vuitton’s every-accessory-but-the-kitchen-sink collection echoed the flashy, pre-amnesia Goldie, while Burberry Prorsum’s “simple life” collection had a lot in common with the denim and gingham Goldie wore once shacked up with Kurt and his wild sons.

So off to Miami we went. Susie, photographer Gabor Jurina and our team headed south to find, among other things, a yacht, a shack, a pickup truck and four blond boys. And to make things even more cozy, they were joined by a crew from CBC’s Fashion File, who followed them throughout the shoot. Watch for the segment on the making of (our) “Overboard” (page 122) this spring.

As much as we were all drawn to the irresistible way this story resonates with the current economic climate—rich girl finds true love in simple and modest surroundings—I love the humour that Susie and Gabor always bring to their work together.

Write to me at letters@fashionmagazine.com and let me know what’s inspiring you this spring.
