Editor's letter: Winter 2010

The holidays are almost here and it's time to start planning your look.

"It's not how you feel, it's how you look."

Billy Crystal sang those lyrics in “You Look Marvelous,” his satirical twist on the notion that it’s not how you look, but how you feel that counts.

Normally, I am a firm believer that inner beauty is more valuable than any shoe, earring or handbag. But it’s the holiday season, and I am singing a different tune. Party invitations have started to arrive and, like Karen von Hahn (page 92), I can no longer leave my appearance to chance. I am plotting which dress I can recycle from the back of my closet (with a tweak from one of the alterationists mentioned in our latest Shop Like a Fashion Editor bonus pullout). I’ll be hunting down a thoroughly modern tux and adorning it with a jewelled clutch after seeing fashion director Susie Sheffman’s “Tuxedo Royale” spread (page 139) and fashion market editor Sarah Casselman’s guide to holiday dressing (page 70). And I’ll take beauty director Adriana Ermter’s advice to style my brows, paint my lips red and fatten up my tired locks (page 80).

Speaking of being tired, it’s an inevitability at this time of year, with all the demands of home, family and work, but I’m determined to savour every precious minute.

And I know that no matter how exhausted I feel, looking my best will help fuel me through. That, and a few extra espressos.

I look forward to hearing from you; write to me at letters@fashionmagazine.com.
