Fall 2009 runway report: Fun fur
From shaggy to shredded to vibrant and decadent, fall furs were brash and unapologetic.
{FALL 2009 TRENDS GUIDE}
Forget Granny’s refined mink stole—the furs stalking the runways this season were unapologetic, brash and in-your-face. From shaggy to shredded, this parade of pelts (Mongolian lamb! Fox! Goat!) seemed to be a call to arms signalling the return of true luxury branding. Even Mrs. Prada momentarily ditched her signature austere aesthetic in favour of a few furry frocks this season. Leading this pack of wild things were Dolce & Gabbana’s shaggy linebacker looks à la Bigfoot, and Gucci’s clever bomber-meets-beast creations. This ready-to-wear monster’s ball also encompassed Giles’ Cousin Itt–inspired maxi skirt, 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Planet of the Apes–styled toppers, Giambattista Valli’s sleeveless ombré robes, Marios Schwab’s vibrant Tickle Me Elmo chubbies, Thakoon’s cheery feather-effect fur jackets and Versace’s decadent plum belted coats. Even Dennis Basso, furrier to the elite, proved that despite the economy’s continuing catatonic state, he still loves a good shag—witness his no-fail opulent furry coat /evening gown formula.
