’87 or ’07?
The Me Decade just won’t die. Here, all the fashion references you need to understand why.
INSPIRATION: AZZEDINE ALAIA
Thanks to a backlash against the “navy blue suit and floppy tie” office uniform of the late ’70s and the aerobics craze, body-flaunting fashions took off in the ’80s. Nobody cut closer than Alaïa, the pint-sized Tunisian designer whose Paris atelier was the preferred hangout for the decade’s supermodels. Using Lycra-blend fabrics, criss-cross seaming and lingerie techniques, the King of Cling often tailored incredibly complex garments—some had as many as 40 pieces—that fit like a second skin. Thanks to his superior cutting skills, Alaïa’s influence in fashion is ongoing, but his heirs this season include Alessandro Dell’Acqua, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Christopher Kane.
