During the ’90s—before saving the planet became the It cause of Hollywood and the East Coast social set—I was obsessed with wildlife conservation. So committed was I to saving elephants, tigers and whales from extinction that I went to extremes to get the job done.

Confession: I impersonated a journalist so I could meet the head of a cutting-edge environmental group. A magazine editor assigned me the story, even though I had never published a thing. My ruse worked, and I wound up with a job as a researcher, junior campaigner and lobbyist.

Fast-forward to 2007: I am now a fashion journalist, and though I still like to consider myself an environmentalist, I haven’t been fighting the fight as much as I should. I’ve been seduced into a lifestyle overflowing with consumerism and yes, some wasteful practices. Sitting in my car, drinking bottled water while eating an apple with more miles on it than my frequent flyer card, I wondered, what had I done for the cause lately?
