Ones to watch: The next biggest things
A sampling of the latest monikers on everyone’s lips.
CHRISTOPHER KANE
When Christopher Kane presented his first collection, for Spring 2007, style.com’s Sarah Mower immediately declared him a “sensation in the making.” After that fast, fierce, highly influential flash of fluorescence, Kane moved into darkly romantic leather for Fall 2007, again in the lead of another raging trend. Mower remained constant in her praise, calling him “the strongest talent to have emerged in London in a decade.”
Gracious, even sentimental, Kane can also be blunt. This past summer, when Victoria Beckham showed up in one of his designs on the front page of a British tabloid, Kane, in a break from the custom of celebrity culture, disowned the endorsement. He told The Guardian: “I’ve got nothing against her, but she’s not the woman I imagine wearing my dresses.” Case in point: For the Swarovski Fashion Rocks for the Prince’s Trust gala in London last month, Kane chose instead as his model Beth Ditto, the large, lesbian and cool lead singer of Gossip.
