Spring Trend 2008: The Manipulators

Fashion was finessed this season, moulded, folded, draped, pleated, frilled and ruched into engineered masterpieces.

With the existential question “What is the new luxury?” on everyone’s lips these days, designers whipped up a momentary practical salve to the brave new world where you can buy Dom Pérignon at Costco and runway rip-offs at the mall. Flexing their technical prowess, high-end fabrics and couture sensibilities, it was as if designers had gone to engineering school over the summer break and come back madly manipulating, moulding, draping, pleating, tiering, folding, bunching, frilling and ruching—sometimes all in one garment. They turned out origami-style looks, ruffles that were simultaneously romantic and stiff, and clouds of confectionery-like tulle that defied the knockoff artists to try, just try.
