Fall 2008 Trend Report
This season's runways have a dramatic little something for every fashion soul.{FALL GUIDE}
ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST
From strict little dresses at Balenciaga to a Jil Sander coat with a 3-D wraparound neck that looks like the staircase at an opera house of the future, the biggest message of the season was minimalism—sculptural lines with a strong emphasis on cut and construction. As seen frequently in both outerwear—a dull trench will no longer do; you need sharp edges, cutaways and moulded looks—and eveningwear (witness the stiff fan jutting up from a one-shouldered Lanvin frock), designers borrowed heavily from their architect friends. The liberal application of sophisticated cutting and draping techniques created complex effects, like stand-away necklines, winged extensions and distorted silhouettes, and brought the season’s obsession with tailoring into clean, cool focus. Bold, luxe and—above all—modern.
