Overboard
In the eye of the global financial storm, the fashion industry emerged with a catchy new term—“recessionista”—and a radical all-or-nothing approach to dressing. On the one hand, design houses like Louis Vuitton and Balmain were singing “Forget your troubles, come on, get happy!” with their glittery, ’80s-inspired OTT excess. It was time to play dress-up and escape to a fantasyland filled with sequins, shimmering appliqués, gold foil ruffles, brocade and crystal embellishment. Balmain sprinkled colourful fairy dust over its gowns, D&G put the Midas touch on a couture-like court-jester jacket, Lanvin went overboard with jewel-encrusted dresses, and Louis Vuitton created an haute hodgepodge where metallic met exotic skins, and tribal met polka dots.
