Q&A with Teatro Verde's Shawn Gibson

We tour the new digs of Yorkville's chic home-and-garden lifestyle boutique.

Why was it important at this stage to grow Teatro Verde?
“Michael [Pellegrino] and I started the company 12 years ago. It was just a little floral company, but it’s always been a progression. We always dreamed that we would be much larger. We’re constantly looking at the store, trying to figure out how can we improve it; how can we make it function better. We needed bigger digs to do that.”

Tell us about the building. It used to be Mount Sinai Hospital?
“Before Teatro Verde was even a thought, we walked by that building, which was derelict and we always admired it because of its Georgian style. We had no idea that one day we would be ending up in that building. We thought, what a beautiful setting for a garden centre in Toronto. That never came about, because the Hazelton Lanes store came up first. So to end up in this building is like coming home to us: it’s something that we wanted from day one.”
