5 questions with Coco Rocha: We meet up with the Canadian supermodel at Banana Republic’s latest Mad Men launch in LA

On Tuesday, Banana Republic’s latest Mad Men collaboration (available online now!) was launched at The Grove in sunny Los Angeles. Canadian supermodel Coca Rocha, who starred in the collection’s latest campaign, was on hand to chat and offer her take on the line at the Banana Republic “Mod Pod,” a repurposed glammed up trailer that was set up on the lawn and offering complimentary hair and makeup touchups (and a mini bottle of champagne!) to attendees. Guests previewed the line, which is comprised of classic silhouettes with modern accents, bright and beautifully patterned dresses, and an assortment of fun accessories.
Event goers were lucky enough to take home a piece from the collection, and I chose a very Megan Draper-esque shift dress with oversized pinstripes and a cut out at the back. FASHION also had the chance to chance to chat with Rocha and hear her thoughts on the line, what she misses most about Canada, and being a role model:
On her favourite part about shopping in Canada:
“I love finding those fun little boutiques that you won’t find in America…things you won’t find anywhere else. I want a piece of clothing that kind of tells a story, which is why this [Banana Republic collection] is sort of perfect”
On being inspired by different eras:
“(I’m inspired by looks) from the 1960s and back. I get really excited and like to mix and match clothes and also shop vintage”
On the Banana Republic Mad Men line:
“(It’s fun) If you want to go all 60’s out like I do…I would have the full hair and makeup and just go for it.” “People get nervouse with these patterns especially when you’re walking down the street by yourself, but I feel like I wanted to (wear this patterned dress) to show people that this is in fact the right choice.” Coco was wearing a necklace as a belt and says that “Just because it says it’s a necklace doesn’t mean it has to be. Play around, see what it does – it might change the whole look”
On her role as judge on The Face:
“The best part is…to think you might have a part in helping them be successful in whatever they do decide to do” “Just because the show is done (filming), we’re all still friends and I still help them in whatever they need to do”. “I want to be the best role model that I can (to them), and I know that they will turn around and hopefully be good role models for future girls that look up to them”.
On missing Canada:
“[What I miss most is] being around family. I go back as much as I can, and every time that I actually get to go back I see family and I stay with family members at home. Even if I’m going to do a FASHION Magazine cover I’m going to stay at my dad’s house.”
