It’s almost swim season, which means it is time to flip through endless shopping guides to find your perfect bikni, tankini, monokini and so on.

Summer is the perfect time to try out new swimsuit shapes and styles that work best with your body, and with a wide selection of suits out there—from one piece to two-piece swimsuits in every colour in the rainbow—you’re bound to have options. If you’re thinking about straying away from the simple one piece at your first pool party of 2013, why not look to Mara Hoffman’s colourful tie-dyed swimsuit for inspiration with cutout panels to add a bit of sultriness to your look? If you don’t feel comfortable showing too much skin, take notes from Rochas’ floral two-piece. Showing only a bit of your midriff, this swimsuit style will definitely add a retro yet feminine touch to your poolside outfit.

If our swimsuit guide still isn’t enough of a motivation to get you trying on new swimsuits, why not look to the ladies on Style Panel for some inspiration?

While BornLippy’s Melanie Morias and I’m A Little’s Alexandra Nikolajev played with the bandeau top to flatter their athletic body shapes, we loved Short PresentsKayla Short’s opting for a retro striped swimsuit to give her the perfect amount of coverage.

Like the crop top trend, the best way to wear your bathing suit this season is to wear it with confidence.

Well this was a tough one to muster up the courage and shoot! As a petite, little lady with an athletic frame, I tend to keep my bathing suit style pretty routine. As a general rule for a boyish figure, you can’t really go wrong in a bandeau top to shape a smaller bust and create the illusion of a long torso. Paired with my favourite candy-striped bottoms, this is my go-to style for any occasion at the beach.

With swimwear, as with clothes, black never goes out of style. This year, the scalloped trend is prominent even in bikinis and this cheeky bottom from Roxy is my main squeeze. However, I know that in the next few years, I can always grab this black top or bottom and mix and match it with other colours, style and prints. Like they say, black is the new black.

It’s only been in the past few years that I’ve acquired quite the collection of bathing suits. This may be because I have a boyfriend from the Caribbean and once or twice a year I get to wear them all day long! Over the past few years I’ve definitely become to know what works on my body and what doesn’t. My all time favourite has to be the bandeau. Since I’m very small on top and more curvy on the bottom, the bandeau works for me. I don’t need much support on top so I don’t have to worry about having it fall off. My advice to find the perfect suit for you is to try it on in person, I cannot even count how many times I’ve ordered a bathing suit online and cross my fingers that it works and it ends up being a disaster. It is also a good idea to establish what kind of body type you are and what you like most about your body so that you can accentuate it in a flattering way. Now if only summer would arrive in Alberta…
