How to wear the boudoir trend: 4 Style Panel tips for rocking this season’s oh so trendy lingerie dress
Continuing on with this year’s ever-popular 1990s craze, the Fall 2013 runways went boudoir happy with a look back at one of the decade’s most popular items: the lingerie dress. Part Courtney Love shout out (that’s our cover girl!), part Hitchcockian ode, sexy slinky spaghetti straps made their way onto the runways at Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Nina Ricci, just to name a few. And while we’ve seen many incarnations of this look over the years, the boudoir trend always seemed a little too risqué to bring outside of the house.
Today, Style Panel shows us how to turn bedroom inspiration into a wearable feminine silhouette. New to Style Panel is Vancouver-based Jillian Lansky of The August Diaries who pairs a daring navy negligee with a khaki pea-coat, polished black boots and pin-straight locks. On the more colourful end of the spectrum, Becky Kung of Velvet & Vino rocks a feminine palette of corals and purples, adding in edge and texture with leather knee-high boots and purple lace trim, perfect daytime outfit to transition into for the evening. Kayla Short of Short Presents brings it back to the ‘90s with a black spaghetti strap dress, a Navajo print over-sized print coat, thin golden jewels, bare legs and ankle-wedge boots with a buckle detailing.

‘Cuz it’s fall, I’m all about the layering. Taking the soft elements that are still lingering in my closet and adding thick knits and rick textures to them. Updating this summer’s lingerie style into a fall outfit, I added the most comfortable oversized sweater. Immediately after picking this one up last week I went back to get another. As the day got cooler, I layered an over-sized shirt underneath the sweater for an effortless fall look.

With Zara’s newly released collection of intriguing lingerie lace pieces and lingerie-styled dresses, I’ve been inspired to recreate a fresh look with this dress by pairing it with the winter pastel colored coat and tall boots, effortlessly finishing off the outfit.

The thing about lingerie-inspired dressing is that it is just that: an inspiration. You need to be seriously careful that you don’t walk out the door looking like you’re actually wearing lingerie. Because, let’s face it, that’s kind of inappropriate for a day to day look. Lingerie dresses have been all over the runways this fall and can be stunningly slinky when done correctly. Keep your makeup and accessories simple and chic (refrain from red lips in this instance) as to not look overdone and maintain that effortless air. A warm and oversized menswear coat is a must-have, especially for us Canadians, as lingerie dresses just aren’t sufficient in this weather. My footwear option of choice is a pair of booties with a slight heel to give some lift to your silhouette while grounding this alluring look.

With its romantic underpinning coupled with some ‘90s edge, this outfit is daring at best. Sexy and seductive with its spaghetti straps, slight ruffle detail accentuating the bust and again at the knee; this LBD mimics a nighty more than a dress. Off setting the playfulness of this dress* I make sure to keep it current** by tossing in some edge with these little black booties, and the perfect shade of berry lipstick.
