The statement earring has had a long and trendy lifespan and this season, it shows no signs of slowing down. The ultimate glitzy outfit cap made appearances on runways at Dolce & Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta and Versace and come holiday season, the right pair of earrings can transform virtually any outfit from a LBD to jeans into a polished and sophisticated look.

The statement earring is a definitive party staple, yet can propose some outfit challenges for timid dresses. So, how do you wear ‘em without looking overdone? Style Panel to the rescue, as usual. Barbara Ann Solomon of Barbara Ann’s Style blog shows us how to rock large gold portrait earrings and leopard at the same time.  Becky Kung of Velvet and Vino shows us how to stay casual but polished in military green and bright crystal bauble earrings.  Amber Desilets of Canadian Fashionista braves the cold to show off an LBD and emerald statement earrings.

Holidays are all about the bling, the more sparkle you have on, the better. Now’s the time to have fun with your accessories, just remember when wearing a bold piece of jewellery, try and make the other pieces around it less dramatic and noticeable. When wearing a dangly earring, I would shy away from wearing a necklace, make the earrings the statement.

Accessories, in general, during the winter are more difficult with the extra layers needed. Jewellery like necklaces, rings and earrings often get swamped out for more useful things like hats, gloves and scarves.

This season, I recommend mixing between your winter accessories and jewellery for an easy luxurious holiday outfit. A faux fur infinity scarfs—that can double as a headband—adds the simple touch of luxe worn with large, gold, portrait earrings to make this look perfect for the holidays.

When it comes to any statement piece its all about toning down other areas of your outfit to really make the item pop. But when I say tone it down, I don’t mean you have to resort to wearing all black with no accessories. That sounds like no fun. I just mean if you’re wearing a statement necklace, tone down your earrings, big rings, your bracelets…you get the picture. Another trick to really making your piece a statement is to try a monochromatic look, mixing prints and textures that will help amp up the colour of your item.

Adding a pair of statement earrings takes any outfit up a notch. Its fun to pull back your hair for the earrings to be visible and pairing them with a neutral outfit such as greys and minimal prints, where the earrings are sure to stand out.
