Well, it looks like being at the forefront of cool is no longer enough. Earlier today, the CFDA, Barney’s New York and Opening Ceremony announced simultaneous collaborations with Intel to produce and market wearable technology. The first matter of business: a co-designed “smart bracelet” created by Intel and Opening Ceremony to be carried exclusively by Barney’s. Having these multiple stamps of approval will no doubt speed up technology’s fashion factor.

“Humberto and I have always allowed our curiosity to take us to uncharted waters. We are diving in to embark on a journey with Intel and can’t wait to see where it will take us,” says Opening Ceremony co-founder Carol Lim via press release. “Intel is a company that has powered our lives in countless ways and now we get to be a part of shaping the 21st century with them.” It’s pretty fitting that OC’s most recent collection was inspired by Spike Jonze’s Her, a film that centres around the role that technology increasingly plays in our lives.

Meanwhile, the CFDA will foster the fashion community’s ongoing relationship with Intel, aiming to build a community of interlaced tech developers and fashion designers. “CFDA’s commitments are to drive innovation in the fashion industry and as we look at the power of technology and its influence on fashion, we believe technology will need to be part of the fashion industry’s DNA,” said CFDA CEO Steven Kolb. “That’s why we are excited to announce a strategic collaboration with Intel on wearable technology in which we can bring together unique strengths of the two industries — Intel, a company that delivers technological innovation across computing devices, and our designers, who design beautiful clothing and accessories that people want to wear. The two together will be a powerful combination.”

This might not be such a stretch after all.
