As US retailers continue their north of the border barrage, a bit more fuel to the fire comes via today’s announcement that Nordstrom will take over the former Toronto Eaton Centre Sears flagship. Excitement! The swap has been suspected since Sears announced it was closing the location in October and now we’ll have two years of construction anticipation to look forward to before Nordstrom opens in Fall 2016.

“We’re excited to be coming to downtown Toronto at Toronto Eaton Centre,” says Nordstrom Canada president Karen McKibbin via press release. “We want to serve those who live and work downtown as well the many visitors to the city and think Toronto Eaton Centre is a great place to do so.” As for details on the actual space, Nordstrom will be occupying the ground floor plus floors two and three for a total of 213,000 square feet of pure shopping gold. 140,000 square feet of additional space will be leased to “best in class retailers,” which given the city’s current fashion upswing must mean more Burberry than bargain basement.

Nordstrom will hit Canada this September at Calgary’s Chinook Centre, followed by Ottawa’s Rideau Centre and Vancouver’s Pacific Cente in 2015. Toronto’s locations come last, with Eaton Centre and Yorkdale Shopping Centre both launching in 2016 and Sherway Gardens in 2017.
