Back when The Beatles were puff-ing away and taking sitar lessons from Ravi Shankar, karma seemed like a hippie fad for the blissed-out granola set. Today, it’s made its way out of the incense-filled archives and into the mainstream, casting a spell on everyone from Sofia Coppola to Justin Bieber, who (with the help of his Twitter followers) named his puppy after the cosmic concept.

In the world of karma, what goes around comes around in a never-ending cycle of cause and effect, birth and rebirth. Kind of like fashion. So it should come as no surprise that this and other mystical themes have become trendy lately for designers, who are referencing its powers in everything from Kenzo’s evil eye sweatshirts to Mara Hoffman’s witchy beach bags.

Thomas Sabo is the latest brand to give in to the alchemy craze with its new Karma Beads jewellery collection, steeped in symbolism, mysticism and positive energy. Comprising 72 beads carved from vibey stones like white jade, aventurine and rose quartz, the line invites wearers to play, collect and choose their own cosmic adventures. The centrepiece of the collection is the Wheel of Karma, which represents balance and inner peace and can be worn either as a pendant or on a chain connecting a ring and a bracelet, similar to intricate Indian hand jewellery.

Hoping for a bit of megawatt karma itself, Thomas Sabo enlisted Brit It girl Georgia May Jagger as its new face. Genetically blessed, gap-toothed and gorgeous, the 22-year-old daughter of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and model Jerry Hall was clearly a very good girl in a past life. “To me, karma means good and bad. It’s about doing good actions and good things that will come back to you,” she says during an interview at the collection’s London launch. As for her own karma, she remains cautiously optimistic: “I hope it would be good. I’m all about positivity.”

Later, Jagger shows me her Karma Bead combination: the skull for life, the snake for sensuality and the sparkling Union Jack for repping her hometown. “I think anywhere you’re from inspires your style,” she tells me. “It’s a fun, personal thing you can do with your friends—like charm bracelets but cooler!” And if it’ll help you score karmic bonus points in the next life, all the better, because, in the words of John Lennon, “Instant karma’s gonna get you…you better get yourself together.”
