This season I want to make an effort to expand my coat collection (rather than buying another cozy knit) as I currently only have two on rotation. This navy number was a recent find and is actually vintage. Quality and the feel are important to me, I want coats that last several years, and I often gravitate towards classics in black, blue and grey.

In the colder months a coat becomes an extension of your look, rather than an accessory on top of the ‘main attraction’. Even with a small coat collection like mine you can keep things new by purposely focusing on the outerwear and styling your outfit around it. Change up your scarf, belt it, roll up the sleeves… you’ll be surprised how much these little spins affect the overall look.

Fall coat season has started off so well for me. It’s amazing how some great finds helped me embrace fall and make peace with summer’s end. The first, a fantastic trench I found at a vintage store here in Halifax and the second, this pre-loved cape I just had to buy when I traveled to Toronto for fashion week. The yellow is utter perfection, it brings a pop of colour to my basic joggers and tee outfit!

If there is one thing that I could never give up, it’s my growing coat collection. I’m always on the hunt to find something to keep me warm once the temperatures dip. Most of my favourites from my collection are vintage ones that I’ve purchased for the years or that have been handed-down through the generations.

This shearling bomber was purchased by my mom, Cynthia, when she was 22, and she (thankfully) kept it, with the hopes that one day I’ll want it. This season, the textured coat is the perfect colour and shape, not to mention it’s insanely warm. I cannot wait to live in this throughout the fall and winter, and style it with absolutely everything.

My go to fall coat this season is a fashion staple with a twist. The leather jacket is an iconic piece and a favourite for many. But instead going for the classic black moto, I’ve been gravitating toward rich tones like deep plums and dark forest green.

A good coat is an absolute necessity in Canada. With the crisp fall air, I’ve been reaching for a coat almost every morning before heading out for my day. This beautiful wool Theory coat (that I scooped up from the popular Montreal boutique JoshuaDAVID) is a worthy investment piece. With its leather sleeves and cowl collar, it’s so much more than a simple black coat. Since moving to Canada from the States, I’ve come to realize that investing in a quality coat is an absolute necessity. It’s also helpful to find styles like this coat that you can easily dress up or down as to get even more use out of your investment.

My favourite fall outerwear is the robe coat. There’s something ultra-cozy about the structure with its blanket style and versatility. I love wrapping myself into this coat on a cooler day, pairing it with over the knee boots. For this look I’ve opted for a dress of similar length to style underneath, perfect for a layering statement.

Usually when fall weather hits I move quickly to my peacoats, but this season I am really loving the look of a graphic sweater or blanket coat. We have a dryer climate in the Interior of BC and this is a perfect layering piece for warmth that is still flattering. Wear it open with a tee and scarf like I have done here, or wrap it across your body and secure it with a belt or boots!

My fall coat is the cape. Why? It’s all about the drama whether for a casual day running errands or a night out with friends.

Fall has been unusually warm here in Calgary and this year I’ve been all about the lightweight trench. Instead of going for a camel colour I decided to go with a classic black. It’s lightweight but still warm enough for the chilly nights. You really can’t go wrong with something so classic!
