What better way to proclaim “the king is back!” than by opening your first show in four years with a feather crown, tilted to one side, enfant terrible steez clearly intact? It’s just how John Galliano made his return to the fashion world in London today, showing his first pieces since being announced as creative director of Maison Martin Margiela. At first glance, the collection has the hallmarks of fashion’s most lauded prodigies: Galliano, Margiela and even a little bit of McQueen—its hodgepodge reminiscent of the moment nineties fashion went from minimalist to maximalist. With nods to fine tailoring, embellishment and experimentation, looks ranged from a bootie-shorts and cape combo to a trench coat accessorized with what can only be referred to as a giant tribal sculpture.

Via press release, the collection is being described as “a process of discovery, returning to one’s roots.” Via Suzy Menkes, it was described as “a show that mixed the wild and wonderful.”
