Fashion week footwear has always been a top subject of runway coverage, primarily due to its wacky, architectural and generally impossible-to-walk-in qualities. But this season’s shoes have stolen the spotlight, going from sculptural show piece to covetable creation we’d actually wear in real life. To wit, here are the Spring 2014 shoes that stylists and editors have been buzzing about all week.

Ostwald Helgason for Aldo Rise

Known for its playful use of colour and signature stripes, London-based Ostwald Helgason is the go-to label of street style stars like Natalie Joos and Miroslava Duma. For their spring collection, designers Susanne Ostwald and Ingvar Helgason celebrated all things happy and beautiful in custom floral prints, brightly hued stripes and balloon animal motifs—all of which was complemented by a show-stopping collection of equally happy and beautiful shoes and bags for ALDO RISE. Incorporating an array of vivid colour, texture and pattern, we predict these will be flying off shelves come spring.

Sophia Webster for J.Crew
J.Crew’s presentation is always one of the hottest tickets of the week, but this season the trailblazing brand gave show goers even more to tweet about by partnering with quirky creative shoe designer Sophia Webster to create a capsule collection of 12 statement styles, from updated Hawaiian prints and laser cut booties to polka dots and sparkling embroidery.

Narciso Rodriguez is known for his clean, classic minimal designs but over the past few seasons, he’s also earned a reputation for his stunning architectural shoes, making a front row seat at his show even more covetable—all the better to ogle his sculptural shoe designs from. Prepare to see the designer’s strappy pointy-toe pumps on fashion editors’ feet come spring.

Birkenstocks
Seriously. The go-to sandal of the granola set was the show shoe of choice for many a hip New York label including Shades of Grey, Edun, Trina Turk and Houghton, where the brand created a custom brocade style for designer Katherine Polk’s runway. Birkenstock has even received the J.Crew stamp of approval—the two brands recently collaborated on a small mens collection this summer. The 90s really must be back.
