When you’re heading to the shows of some the biggest names in fashion, you had better dress the part. And that’s exactly what show goers did yesterday for the Prada and Fendi shows. The streets of Milan were practically a back catalogue of recent statement looks from the two fashion houses, with some of the greatest hits from Karl & Miuccia coming back out to play.

The coveted and desirable Fendi “bag bugs” from the Fall 2013 collection only to be matched by the brand’s latest incarnation of the furry accessory, the Karl Lagerfeld fur bag, designed by the man himself. We also spied an olive greet colour block dress from Prada’s Spring 2014 collection mixed in a thrifty move with a ringed fur stole from Spring 2011. Everyone’s favourite clotheshorse Anna Dello Russo, among others, toted Fendi’s Peekaboo fur bag to accent her canary yellow fur coat, while Leigh Lezark was in head to toe Fendi in an ombré-d layered dress and monster-like fur coat.

While the fashions were wild and playful, they were rooted in history and all shared a similar theme. Bright patterns and prints were elevated thanks to modern art notes. A Schiaparelli-style shocking pink coat with trompe l’oeil silver gloves is more highbrow than kooky-aunt when you note the borrowed cues from surrealism and Schiaparelli. It was only fitting then, that in one of the historical artistic hotbeds, that the streets of Italy were full of artistic expression.
