If last week’s street style shots taught us anything, it’s that fashion is fun, bright and thriving in Australia. The annual Sydney Fashion Week is a powerhouse of young unbridled talent, packed with 75 designers—most of them up and comers—trying to carve a niche. Everyone’s buying with national pride in mind, not to mention a demand for seasonless dressing as determined by the country’s high temps.
We travelled Down Under to see what all the big fuss was about and rounded up the 7 top designers and moments to write home about from Sydney Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015.
Sophomore Star
Emma Mulholland confirmed her rising star status with day-glo hues, pageboy hairpieces and beer can prints. The ‘90s-inspired silhouettes were just icing on the cake.
The Veteran
Designer Dion Lee debuted his diffusion line at an ultra-cool venue in Sydney’s Waterloo district. Lee’s twisted minimalism introduced denim and oversized men’s shirting with hair that was Samurai-inspired. His slit-back skirts, anoraks and pale blue suiting will be surefire hits with Aussie It girls next season.
Model Citizen
T-shirts by model Ollie Henderson were sported around the tents, spreading the good vibes with slogans like “Start the Riot,” “Sexism Sucks,” and “Welcome Refugees Save Lives.”
Snake Charmer
We Are Handsome swimwear designers Jeremy and Katinka Sommers branched out into resort wear this season, adding tunics and palazzo pants to their loud, highly-coveted range of swimwear. Most memorable though was the on-stage albino diamond backed python, which had guests squirming in their seats.
Girl Power
Though a smaller name this side of the hemisphere, designer Alice McCall celebrated 10 years with a show so optimistic, airy and light, it’d please just about any girly girl. Gary Pepper blogger Nicole Warne was one of them, spotted outside the show in a neoprene lip print bustier and skirt by the designer.
A-Lister
Red carpet star Alex Perry went for the gold, opening his show with Victoria Secret babe Alessandra Ambrosio. Showing short skirts, sequins and mixed media, Perry’s show was younger than past with cut out details, crop tops and to-there slits.
Best Nomads
Bec & Bridge designers Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston veered from their traditional structured with a distinct boho vibe. Using chambray, hand woven denims along with raw unfinished hems, the look was all about that “lived in” appeal.
