In the end, it was the origami that won out on the opening night of World Mastercard Fashion Week.

The six finalists in last night’s Mercedes Benz Start-Up Competition were the strongest group yet in the 3-year-old cross-Canada talent search.

Sisters Chloe and Parris Gordon of Beaufille opened the show with abstract prints based on artist Ed Burtynsky’s aerial photographs, followed by made-in-Africa handwoven leathers and Indian prints with a boho vibe by Laura Siegel and Black.I’s cool geometrics. Eliza Faulkner of Vancouver Island showed oversized denim suits and dresses, and Montreal’s Vaiken, designed by Valerie Tolila, offered glazed raffia jackets and beaded harnesses.

But it was the final turn from Alberta-born, Toronto-based Sid Neigum that clinched the prize with his asymmetrical ribbed jerseys, laser cut neoprene and handcut origami parallelograms, woven into bulbous jackets.

Neigum receives a fully-produced show at World Mastercard Fashion Week next March, the mentorship of the judging panel, a $30,000 bursary to be used towards the advancement of his business, and coverage in an upcoming issue of FASHION Magazine.
