“I have nothing to wear.” Judging by Mikael D’s Spring 2015 line-up of red carpet-ready confections this oh-so familiar (and often panic-stricken) phrase no longer has a place in our vernacular. Formally one-half of eveningwear label Pavoni, designer Mikael Derderian established his own private label filled with after-dark temptations. Sure, there are the usual suspects–thigh-high slits, plunging necklines, strategic cutouts–but there’s also an element of superior craftsmanship that accompanies these posh pieces. Blue, ranging from powder to royal, was a key colour in his spring collection, though the palette dipped into pastel and white too. The shimmering translucent column gown was memorable for all the right reasons; it stood out among the many meringue clouds. Brides-to-be caught a glimpse of Derderian’s “I do” designs with the sweet (and sexy–hello mini skirt) gown intended to pull us under his bridal wave. From the tulle to the embroidery to the tiers of ruffles, Mikael D may not be for the minimalist, but he certainly knows how to take your evening look to the next level. All that’s left for you to do is RSVP to the party.
