If the opening night slot has anything to do with making a splash, last night’s World Mastercard Fashion Week ribbon cutting honours couldn’t have been better bestowed. Mikhael Kale’s Fall 2015 show was like one wow after the next, setting the bar waaay high for Toronto’s week of upcoming debuts.

Models moved slowly and through multiple rows, as if to indicate, “there’s something to look at here.” And indeed there was, with looks ranging from a lime shearling-trim embellished tweed car coat to a bejeweled brocade T-shirt dress (also fur-trimmed) and a bevvy of laser cut leathers, all which had iPhones snapping.

Cutouts have become something of a Mikhael Kale signature, and his latest was replete with skin-baring circles on everything from latex minis to an oversized leather coat. Circles were echoed elsewhere, with crystal embellishment on a striking collared dress and gilded breastplates towards the end of the show.

Backstage after the show, Kale was pretty adamant about describing himself as a futurist, but the collection just oozed of a seventies era living room and all its sexy trappings—right down to Daft Punk’s Giorgio Moroder soundtrack.

Being the first show of fashion week, it’s too early to tell who will take top honours at Friday night’s FASHION Magazine Awards. But it’s safe to say that Mikhael Kale’s a strong contender for a repeat.
