48 hours: Chic Chicago, pt. 2

The Windy City serves up modern art, iconic architecture, stylish shops and more.

By Siofan Davies

1:30 p.m. The Art Institute of Chicago’s new Modern Wing opened last spring, making the Grant Park fixture the second largest museum in the U.S. When you’ve had your fill of works by 20th- and 21st-century architects, designers, photographers and artists, head to Terzo Piano for a glass of wine and some organic fare from legendary chef Tony Mantuano. Then head east to Millennium Park, where large-scale design mingles with the greenery (111 S. Michigan Ave., 312-443-3626, artinstituteofchicago.org)

4:00 p.m. Even those immune to the charms of a city skyline will be disarmed by the tall-dark-and-handsomes that tower over Chi-Town. The Chicago Architecture Foundation’s boat tour, operating from May to November, will introduce you to the beauty of classic American architecture. Did we mention there’s a bar on board? 9:06 p.m. The city’s cool and comely pack the huge bar, communal tables and cozy banquettes of excessively hip resto Sunda. The extensive “new Asian” menu includes Chicago magazine’s vote for best new dish—the Devil’s Basket, a heaping jumble of soft-shell crab and spicy chili peppers tossed in the wok. Our picks: ahi tuna sashimi crusted with crab cake, a rich update of the sushi standard; and No You Didn’t…The Ultimate Handroll, packed with crab, shrimp tempura, salmon and spicy tuna—oh, yes, they did. Ask your server to recommend a cold sake, as the list is too extensive to attempt on your own. (110 W. Illinois St., 312-644-0500, sundachicago.com)

11:00 p.m. After dinner, follow the crowd moving over to The Underground, an easy walk from Sunda. A speakeasy meets secret lair (with crates for tables and an illuminated world map on the wall) awaits you in this basement lounge. Reserve a table so you have your own to dance on—otherwise, you risk having to wait in the ubiquitous line outside. (56 W. Illinois St., 312-644-7600, theundergroundchicago.com)
