Nantucket chic, Penélope Cruz speaks, Polaroid makes a comeback and why gallerinas are the new It girls.
Destinations: Nantucket
The Obamas may have vacationed in Martha’s Vineyard, but if you really want to relax the way Old Money America does, you’re better off avoiding the flash and slipping away to the capital-Q quaint nearby island of Nantucket. Porter airlines has launched flights from Toronto to Boston, and from there it’s only a hop and a skip on a wee Cape Air prop plane to Nantucket’s beaches, high-end restos bursting with lobsters, and cobblestoned streets full of historical buildings and Pretty People, who all got the “dress preppy today” memo on their BlackBerrys. Live like you too “summer” there at the new White Elephant Hotel Residences (whiteelephanthotelresidences.com). As if you were at your wealthy aunt’s guesthouse, suites come complete with kitchenettes, Royal Doulton china, downy white couches, soaring white-painted ceilings, gas fireplaces, old-fashioned soaking tubs and Assouline coffee-table books scattered about just so—it’s New England chic without even a hint of kitsch. Don’t want to wait until next summer to put on your best distant-relative-of-a-Kennedy face? The famous annual Christmas stroll weekend takes place December 6 to 9.—Leah Rumack
