Spring 2010 culture report: Music
More MGMT, Nelly Furtado jams with Timbaland, and Melissa Auf der Maur picks the next big thing.

You’ve been divvying up your dance card between LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip and/or MGMT for so many moons, and now all three are finishing up new albums. Time to play favourites? LCD Soundsystem is the eternally hype-worthy James Murphy, who has recorded this third, untitled-at-press-time album (DFA Records). Super-groovy. MGMT’s Congratulations (Sony Music Canada) brings a major new wave of surf-pop to city-bound scenesters. As for Hot Chip, the adored quintet have said they’re mellowing out with One Life Stand (DFA Records), their fourth studio record; we hope that threat doesn’t extend to the live shows, which they’re playing with U.K. compatriots and cool kids The Xx (the Toronto date is April 20). P.S. Watch out for the new kid on the floor: One-girl electro riot MNDR (Amanda Warner, in real life) is releasing her full-length debut this spring.
