Travel: Vienna's best restaurants
The hills around it may be alive with the sound of music, but Vienna's kitchens are alive with innovation.
Ein Wiener Salon
If you want to salon the way the coolest locals do, reserve seats at the tiny Ein Wiener Salon (einwienersalon.com), owned by Sven Bader and Felix Strasser. Their backgrounds in fashion and architecture are reflected in the decor of this faux-kitschy boîte. A candelabra, damask wallpaper and a massive portrait of Empress Maria Theresa set the scene for modern Viennese feasts prepared and served by the couple, with moral support from their dog, Laura. The prix fixe menu (three courses for $60, up to six courses for $85) is beyond delicious, with fusion-y selections like lemongrass-pumpkin soup with octopus carpaccio; roasted filet of walleye with beluga lentils and chanterelle mushrooms; and plum stew with Tahitian vanilla panna cotta.
