Picasso? Present. De Chirico? Present. Dietrich? Present. These and 27 other luminaries of mid-century stardom are accounted for in Irving Penn Portraits (shown, Abrams, $59).
Charlotte Smith had as close to a fairy godmother as any fashion dreamer could wish for: hers was American vintage-clothing collector Doris Darnell, who bequeathed her 5,000 precious pieces—each was tissue-wrapped and shipped to her goddaughter in Australia. In Dreaming of Dior (Atria Books, $33), Smith—curator at Sydney’s Fashion and Textile Gallery, where The Darnell Collection is housed—recounts the stories passed down to her about each fashion confection, accompanied by adorable illustrations courtesy of Grant Cowan.
