Art + fashion: Rosson Crow for Zac Posen

The American painter creates lush hothouse textiles for Posen’s party frocks.

Art types have long said painting’s dead, but none has dared say it to the nomadic, enigmatic American painter Rosson Crow.

“Or maybe someone did say it,” says the 27-year-old Texan-born blonde, chuckling, “and I just didn’t give a fuck. That’s just as likely.”

Crow, a bright belle among the celebrated bad boys (Dan Colen, Dash Snow—RIP) of the downtown New York and L.A. art scenes, has never been anything but a painter. She does, however, have a plan B.

“I’ve always said I’d run away and join the rodeo,” she says. “I’d be a barrel racer. You can win some money, I guess, but more importantly, you get to wear sparkly dresses.”

Ah, so that’s what she and Zac Posen have in common! For four collections now—spring, pre-fall, fall and, next, resort—Crow has created lush hothouse textiles for fashion’s patron saint of party girls.

“I got a call [in 2009] from a stylist friend, a boy I hadn’t talked to in years,” says Crow. “He said, ‘My boyfriend wants to work with you.’ I said, ‘Who are you dating now?’ And he said, ‘Zac Posen.’ I went, ‘Oh, my God. I’d love to!’”
