Fall culture report: Films
Fate, Facebook and finances: Fall’s heavy-hitting films invade the screen.
{FALL CULTURE REPORT}
LATE AUTUMN
Barney’s Version (pictured)
Starring: Paul Giamatti, Minnie Driver and Rachelle Lefevre.
This adaptation of Mordecai Richler’s raucous novel was a dream project for Canadian producer Robert Lantos, who assembled a strong cast of Americans (Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman), Brits (Minnie Driver, Rosamund Pike) and one bona fide Montrealer (Twilight vet Rachelle Lefevre).
The Tree of Life
Starring: Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.
None of this year’s movies has stoked as much anticipation among chin-stroking cinephiles as the latest feature by Terrence Malick, the visionary American director who’s released a mere five films in 37 years. Brad Pitt and Sean Penn leapt at the chance to work on The Tree of Life, which combines a family saga with elements of the fantastic.
Burlesque
Starring: Christina Aguilera, Stanley Tucci and Cher.
Pop diva Christina Aguilera’s first movie vehicle is shaping up to be irresistible trash. She stars as a newcomer who helps save an ailing L.A. burlesque club run by none other than Cher, in her first big-screen appearance in seven years. Here’s hoping for a gloriously kitschy combination of Coyote Ugly, Moulin Rouge and the video for “If I Could Turn Back Time.”
