Fall culture report: Music

The releases most fashionable, most intriguing and simply too big to ignore.

The music industry might be perpetually uncertain of its fate these days, but it’s not giving up the fight. This back-to-school season lacks a “sure thing”—although Capitol Records is betting the farm on Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream being a monster hit. Nevertheless, there’s plenty to keep the music fan enchanted until winter sets in. Here’s a sampling of what to (fingers crossed) expect….

AUGUST

Katy Perry, Teenage Dream . She’s already had a smash summer single in the form of “California Gurls,” but Katy Perry (pictured) has a serious stash of bubble gum dance-pop anthems up her sleeve. If keeping a high profile is any indication of success, Perry should have her quest to become Queen of Pop locked; her tabloid-titillating romance with Russell Brand and growing status as a fruit-sporting, oddball fashion icon ensure she’s in the headlines every day. And there’s much more mild naughtiness on this album, including odes to hard partyin’ and “going all the way”—not to mention a takedown track in which she accuses an ex (rumoured to be Travis McCoy) of falling asleep during foreplay. Ouch.

SEPTEMBER

Interpol, Interpol. These nattily attired New Yorkers appeared to be paying more attention to their suits than their music on their last couple of records. They’re back with original label Matador after a brief flirtation with EMI, though, and word is that this outing falls back toward their first album in terms of epic, romantic gloom.

Of Montreal, False Priest. These southern weirdos have become as well known for their theatrical antics and garish costumery—or lack thereof; front man Kevin Barnes performed part of a show naked a few years ago—as their eternally evolving music. Who knows what’s in store for this album, since Barnes has spent the past two Of Montreal records performing in the invented guise of a black, transsexual funk singer named Georgie Fruit.
