Nights at the museum

Spotlights will rake the night sky on September 9, at the gala opening film of the 11-day Toronto International Film Festival. But the glow will linger long afterwards because on the 12th, TIFF will fling open the doors of its new Bell Lightbox headquarters (tiff.net/tiffbelllightbox). Let’s hope those doors are well oiled and revolving, because there are scores of reasons to descend upon the state-of-the-art screening facility and exhibition centre. The mantra for TIFF’s 2010 annus mirabilis is “Essential Cinema.” The title of the festival’s agonized-over list of the world’s 100 most influential films, it’s also an exhibition at the Lightbox that recaps the history of film, from director Carl Theodor Dreyer to Scarlett O’Hara. Film cultists will relish the iconic objects presented in a cabinet-of-curiosities setting, including Brian O’Blivion’s helmet from Videodrome; original storyboards from Gone with the Wind; the cab licence Robert De Niro used while getting method for Taxi Driver. There are also media installations by Atom Egoyan and Winnipegger Guy Maddin, who imagines “lost” films by movie greats. During the film festival proper, catch installations by international art names at seven venues, including The Power Plant, such as Chris Chong’s homage to Kurosawa and Martin Arnold’s riffs on The Passion of Joan of Arc. Later this fall, DJ Spooky will be one of a series of musicians performing live during screenings of classic silent films—he’ll “accompany” The Birth of a Nation (Nov. 16 and 17). Another bright spot in November is the record-breaking Tim Burton exhibition that originated at the MoMA—yet another reason to visit the shining box that light and sound built. —Betty Ann Jordan
