Gold, guns, girls
Dodge the onslaught of cop buddy shows this fall and stick to spy games: Lost’s J.J. Abrams is taking a Mr. and Mrs. Smith approach to Undercovers (Citytv) (pictured), which is about married ex-CIA agents who return to espionage and steam up their relationship along the way. Those looking to get a hit of Alias-style McG-produced action should check out Maggie Q in Nikita—a reboot of the female assassin story. Martin Scorsese, the godfather of gangsters, is taking to the flat-screen to tell his latest wise-guy tale. The lush-looking Boardwalk Empire (HBO Canada) takes place in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, with tales of corruption, gambling and rum-running. It packs an able cast of character actors—Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Dabney Coleman—and showgirl-worthy ladies—Paz de la Huerta and Gretchen Mol. The Good Wife (Global) is still trying to decide between staying with the hubby and starting anew with the hottie. There’ll be more fam-drama from the Bravermans of Parenthood (Citytv), and more time-travelling lessons on Being Erica (CBC). For its fourth and final season, The Tudors (CBC) follows a declining Henry (both in power and in health) and his wandering wife Katherine Howard, then his last-hitch effort with final wife Catherine Parr, played by Joely Richardson. Speaking of spouses, in the fifth season of Dexter (The Movie Network), the titular serial-killer cop will be juggling avenging his wife’s death and taking care of the kids—very noir Mr. Mom.
