Amanda Bulman
CITY: Charlottetown, Halifax
About Amanda
My name is Amanda Bulman, and I am a 22-year-old student, photographer, writer and dog lover. I’m from Prince Edward Island, but decided a few months ago to move to the scenic and stylish city of Halifax on a whim. Since coming here, I’ve been trying to live a little more dangerously—I’ve become a stand-up comic, a sushi lover and an indoor rock climber. What inspires me most about fashion is the fact that bodies can essentially become easels for artwork.
Who is your style icon and why?
The Olsen twins. Hands down. The Olsens are the queens of reinvention (sorry, Madonna). Originally they were viewed by the public as cute, giggly Full House girls, and then they reinvented themselves as milk-ad hotties, and next the two girls ushered in the famous hobo chic that literally had teenage girls around the world dressing in their shabbiest clothes and carrying extra-large coffees. Finally, today the Olsen twins create two very amazing lines of clothing and are heralded by the biggest names in fashion as the “real deal.”
What’s your favourite item in your closet?
A black, leather motorcycle jacket. It goes with everything. I love to wear it with florals to surprise people.
What was your favourite childhood outfit?
I went through a weird, Nirvana-loving tomboy phase when I was nine, and therefore lived in ripped jeans, a backwards cap, and a red-and-black checkered flannel shirt. It’s an embarrassing subject now.
What’s your worst outfit ever?
Oh, God. At my high school, it was very chic to wear awful, skin-tight denim dresses. I wore one of these monstrosities with cowboy boots and a flower tucked behind my ear. Needless to say, I did not win “best dressed” that year.
Name a current celeb whose style you admire and tell us why.
Lately I’m really loving Hillary Clinton. I know that sounds crazy, but Hillary has really transformed her style in her past few public appearances, and I think she has begun to realize that women in power do not have to stick to boxy suits and masculine looks. She’s wearing more brights and showing more skin, and was even seen in (gasp!) lace. It’s a bold move for a woman in her position, and I think it sends the message that style need not be sacrificed for power.
What’s a trend you hate?
I hate seeing leggings everywhere I look. It’s played out and unoriginal.
Why do you love the shopping/fashion scene in your town?
There are two things that are especially great about the Halifax fashion scene: 1) Everyone is passionate about fashion, and the streets are overrun by residents doing either their best Carrie Bradshaw impression or their best sullen hipster impersonation (picture Rivers Cuomo glasses and Vivienne Westwood everywhere). This means that there is also a huge amount of support backing local designers (everyone wants something original), and that tourists and newcomers are constantly amazed by the outfits that people wear. It’s like living in a three-ring fashion circus. 2) The downtown core is packed with great little boutiques, vintage stores and street vendors who sell amazing products at reasonable prices. This means that even a resident with a modest income (me, for example) can put together a stylish outfit at a low, low price.
