A Budding Passion: Born and raised in Montreal, the McCulloch sisters have had a love affair with fashion since their early days. Inspired by rummages through their grandmothers’ shoes and costume jewellery, the inseparable duo understands the art of dressing up and recognizes the playful nature of a fabulous outfit. When it comes to their personal style, they enjoy taking cues from the past and giving them a modern twist. It is most appropriate to say that fashion is their passion. As emerging writers, Sara and Marie want to combine their taste for words with their fashion. They both enjoy translating abstract style concepts into words.
Who is your style icon and why?
We don’t really have specific style icons; it’s more like we admire the attitude toward clothing during any time from the ’20s to the ’60s – women embraced their femininity and dressed up! They brought together individual and unique pieces to make a cohesive whole. Even in tailored suits, details like line and fit were important. Life is in the details.We feel that many people today allow the clothes to wear them rather than they wearing the clothes. The whole point of an attractive outfit is to carry an individual and authentic attitude.
What’s your favourite item in your closet?
Sara: My silver piano-key necklace. I recently purchased it, and it goes with everything. It carries a good tune with my entire wardrobe.
Marie: My pervinca, satin Miu Mius. They were literally my first step into womanhood.
What was your favourite childhood outfit?
Sara: My jungle-themed jumper, safari hat and unkempt hair. Enough said.
Marie: My little, pink velour outfit, black Mary Janes and pigtails. Enough said.
What’s your worst outfit ever?
A lady never has a horrible outfit.
Name a current celeb whose style you admire and tell us why.
Dita von Teese! She is inspired by the past and knows how to make individual pieces her own. She is the epitome of modern glamour, and more importantly, she accentuates her womanly figure.
What’s a trend you hate?
LEGGINGS. Leggings are not pants. Why?
Why do you love the shopping/fashion scene in your town?
Meeting and speaking to the owners of the stores led to much discovery and revelation of style in ethnic Montreal. This discovery can be summed up as the following: Montreal represents something different from other cities – history, culture and religion collide to create a sense of personal identity and a fashion-forward attitude, which are at the core of Montrealers’ effortless style.
