I have had a love of fashion from a young age and have encompassed all facets of the field in both my personal and professional environments. Studying at Parsons New York gave me a renewed impetus to involve fashion in my professional endeavours. As a result, I have enjoyed success in exposing the vibrant fashion scene in my native Vancouver. Being an editor for BC Fashion Week, appearing on Citytv’s Breakfast Television and having a weekly fashion column in the Metro newspaper have proven my commitment and made me realize that I have a thirst for more.
Who is your style icon and why?
I don’t have one particular style icon in mind, but I do admire people who regularly step out of the box and try on garments you wouldn’t normally see off the runways. From the eccentric Isabella Blow to the subtler Chloë Sevigny, these women define personal style.
What’s your favourite item in your closet?
I’m a jeans girl and I have about 20 pairs that I love and will never part with. My favourite at the moment are my black Kate Moss Topshop jeans I bought last year in London. The rise and cut of the jeans fit me beautifully, so I wear them just about everywhere.
What was your favourite childhood outfit?
My light-blue Hello Kitty shirt paired with green corduroy pants and pink, sparkly jelly shoes.
What’s your worst outfit ever?
When I was in Grade 7, I was honoured to represent my school in the annual May Day parade. I wore this horrible, white, lace-and-tulle wedding dress that my mom picked out. That was a momentous occasion I would love to forget.
Name a current celeb whose style you admire and tell us why.
I admire a guy who can pull things together himself. André 3000 from Outkast is a genius at harmoniously pairing patterns and cuts to suit himself and his vivacious personality.
What's a trend you hate?
I don’t necessarily hate this trend, but I never quite understood how people wore cowboy boots in hot weather. I was in New York when the trend emerged, and people were wearing cowboy boots in the dead middle of summer. Anybody who lives on the east coast knows how humid it can get. I just don’t believe in being uncomfortable for the sake of being “in style.”
Why do you love the shopping/fashion scene in your town?
What some people don’t know is that Edmonton is a fabulous destination for shopping. Edmonton doesn’t just have the best mall in the country, but it also has great shopping streets like Whyte Avenue and 124th Street, which are both great for independent stores that feature products you won’t necessarily see at the mall. Vintage and thrift stores are also sporadically placed around town, so you get the best of the old and new.
