Canada Day

Our true north strong and free turns 145 on Sunday with all the traditional red-and-white fanfare: fireworks, parades, barbecues and many a rousing verse of “The Maple Leaf Forever.” It also means it’s been a year since Kate Middleton won our hearts (again) in her red Sylvia Fletcher fascinator.

Oh Canada at Inniskillin Winery

Inniskillin Winery in picture-perfect Niagara-on-the-Lake is hosting four days of Canada Day fetes fit for a gourmand. Chardonnay poached prawn, an east coast oyster bar and celebrity chef Lynn Crawford’s chocolate strawberry shortcake will all be accompanied by refreshing wines from the vineyard and an after-dark fireworks show.

Take this Waltz

Sarah Polley’s latest is as much about the hot summer months in Toronto as it is about the cooling off of a relationship. Michelle Williams plays Margot, a woman happily married to her husband Lou, played by Seth Rogen, who then falls for her neighbour. Will she choose to stay in a good relationship or risk it all for the chance of a great one?

In theatres across Canada June 29.

Shakespeare in High Park

Toronto’s Shakespeare in High Park kicks off its 30th season this weekend with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Presented by the Canadian Stage, this is the eighth time the Athenians, Fairies and Mechanicals frolic beneath the park’s famous cherry trees.

Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

Montreal’s internationally renowned jazz fest began with a wail on Wednesday as Janelle Monáe performed at Metropolis, followed the next day by an outdoor Rufus Wainwright concert. If you missed those there’s still plenty of great acts to catch, including musical royalty Ziggy Marley and Adam Cohen, Quebec cellist Jorane, New York’s Beirut and Norah Jones, who closes the festival next Saturday.
