6 celebrities who tried to pull focus and failed

Remember that kid on the playground who couldn’t deal with someone winning the spelling bee or taking a gold medal in Track and Field? Instead of high-fiving their friend or focusing on doing their own thing, they’d pull focus. Which is a drag queen way of saying they’d create some epic drama to overshine any good news or pick a random fight with somebody in an effort to take the spotlight away from whoever else was getting it. Well, sometimes that attention-obsessed kid grows up and ends up becoming a celebrity… and feels the need let their inner child out. The internet is a hotbed for wanna-be click-baiters who like to trump each other. We’ve rounded up a few well-known names in the pulling focus game to give them the notoriety they deserve.

Kim Kardashian
Beyonce dropped her second visual album, Lemonade, on Saturday and Kimmy apparently couldn’t cope with the amount of heat and chatter moving from her instagram account to Queen Bey’s (whose disc is well worth the chit chat). So what does KKard try to do to bring the love back to her? Well, she took some of the most bizarrely cropped chest pics known to ‘gram and did her attention seekin’ man proud (there are also pics posted of the two of them having intimate mouth-to-neck moments). Whether you love the KK or not, its hard to swipe through the pics and not get a whiff of the perfumed waft of desperation.

Kanye West
“Imma let you finish” has gone down in history as the slogan to end all slogans for the pull focus movement. Now there are many tumblr pages, including this one— http://kanyegate.tumblr.com/ —that solidify West as the PF King. It all started the moment Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Music video awards to declare that Beyonce had “one of the best music videos of all time,” and the man’s been at it ever since, gaining more HBM (haters per minute) than you can count. The reason isn’t because he is a talent to content with, it is the fact that he eagerly tries to take the spotlight from any and every person-place-thing who dares to make news (see his fashion week tweets about other designers) outside of his realm. He even manages to pull focus from himself…

Chris Brown
When 20-year-old singer Kehlani allegedly attempted suicide and went to instagram to talk about her depression, it gave Brown the stupid idea to tweet about how he felt Kehlani should “stop flexing for her gram”. Brown felt she was faking it for followers and that her online expression of sadness was just a ploy. Although Brown is already public enemy number one for many Rihanna fans, his opinion brought a barrage of tweets that slapped his idea down and highlighted his insensitivity to the situation.

Taylor Swift
The usually inoffensive Swift started a full-on 48 hour twitter war when she replied to Nicki Minaj’s tweet about not getting nominated for a VMA, stating “I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..” Instead of getting her hearts clicked, TSwift got her knuckles bruised when Minaj decided to school her on race relations and how her complaints against the VMAs had nothing to do with her. So many sided with Minaj and thought Swift—who ended up apologizing to Minaj—was just banking on the bad blood.

Ayesha Curry
After Kim Kardashian and a few other female celebrities decided to try to rage against Instagram’s anti-breast rules by posting a few “free-the-nipple” nude selfies, Ayesha Curry turned to twitter to have at it. The actress/wife of NBA MVP Stephen Curry, tweeted back her disdain: “Everyone’s into barely wearing clothes these days huh? Not my style. I like to keep the good stuff covered up for the one who matters.” She got it back, tenfold. A hand full of feminists and anti-slut shamers—who have no problem with the female body—were declaring Curry’s tweet to be backwards and medieval. Kardashian fans did triple salchows over it too, comparing Curry’s fame/style with Kim’s.

Azealia Banks
You can always count on Azealia Banks to cause a Twitterstorm when she wants to. The rapper loves to steal thunder from the stars and she’s very good at it. Although she was on the right side of history when she went after Iggy Azalea and ripped that girl a new one (for good reason), Banks just decided to go after Beyonce. She recently raged about how Lemonade is “the antithesis of Feminism” and went on to Tweetsplain that Ms. Knowles should not be heartbroken about Jay Z’s alleged affair(s). “That’s not strength that’s stupidity,” Banks says of Queen Bey’s Lemonade narrative, days after the rapper praised the project online. Then she dropped some new music of her own and taunted the beehive further. Get it together, lady!
