Centre Stage 2015: Inside the Canadian Opera Company’s annual vocal competition

At last night’s Centre Stage gala, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts transformed into Simon Fullersville for the third annual live opera competition. Eight mega-talented hopefuls belted out their best Mozart (and Verdi, Rossini and Puccini…) arias for a chance to win cash prizes in support of the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio. The Ensemble, a breeding ground for opera’s future homegrown stars, provides world-class training, mentorship and support. The night’s big winner was Emily D’Angelo, who despite a broken leg was able to charm the judging panel and audience into awarding her both first place and audience choice. Second and third place winners were Lauren Eberwein and Bruno Roy, respectively.

Post competition, 300 high rolling opera enthusiasts took to the stage, where dinner was served in the best  photo op setting of the social season.
