Oh, country music. No other genre has as many award shows (seriously) but then again, nobody puts on quite a show like the country stars do. And when it comes to the red carpet, it’s an all-out extravaganza. Dressing for a country music awards show is basically like the Grammys meets prom: the bigger the hair, the glitzier the dress, the better. For last night’s Academy Of Country Music Awards there was a lot of glitter, but also a number of totally refined and frankly, unexpected looks.

Taylor Swift seemed to be taking a style note from new BFF Karlie Kloss. Her black and white ensemble by J. Mendel featured a crop top with cut-out detailing and a long skirt complete with thigh-high slit. Swift also departed from her usual shimmery cat-eye makeup with a fierce vibrant blue smoky eye, paired with a coral lipstick applied so perfectly that we did a double take when she came on stage.

If you’re not yet aware of Kacey Musgraves, she’s set to become a household name by year-end. She won the ACM for album of the year and is a little more liberal than your typical country star (just give “Follow Your Arrow” a listen to see what we mean) but looked the part of honky tonk belle in a voluminous Miu Miu gown, paired with a very Western-looking belt. Maybe not the best accessory choice but, given the event we’ll let it slide. Miranda Lambert, meanwhile, wore one of her best looks yet—she usually plays into the country superstar stereotypes when it comes to red carpet style, but her gold Randi Rahm gown was a total win. (As was her performance of Merle Haggard’s “Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down,” as well as the four ACM awards she went home with!) The Swarovski crystal beaded gown showed off ample cleavage—it basically looks like it was made for Lambert—and her look was complemented with rose gold makeup and loose, wavy hair.

And finally, it’s not a country music red carpet round up without Carrie Underwood. She wore a white Oscar de la Renta gown with gold fringe detailing—a little more understated than what we’re used to seeing on the singer. However, Underwood loves to go all-out with makeup and last night’s lash-heavy look was no exception. So, who do you think deserves the title of best dressed from the 2014 ACM Awards?
