The best of the music industry showed up in sunny LA for this year’s MTV VMAs, and let’s just say it was show-stopping, both on the red carpet and on stage. Of course most of the action went down inside, like Jay-Z and Blue Ivy head bobbing to Mama Beyoncé’s flawless performance (what divorce?), but we’re still wrapping our heads around the wild looks our fave celebs were sporting last night. With the VMAs unofficially dubbed as the place  to go out all out in both wardrobe and performance (Miley Cyrus can check both off at last year’s memorable and image-changing performance), you can bet these outfits were what everyone was tweeting about. From Jennifer Lopez’s jaw-dropping sparkly dress to Gwen Stefani’s hot pink suit (sans blue bikini this time around) to the asset-baring Kardashian clan, we round up the best-dressed celebrities of the VMAs 2014.

Despite the warm temperature, it seemed like all the stars were hot for leather last night. While Miley worked a crop top ensemble by Alexandre Vauthier, a leather-clad Ariana Grande opened the show with bang (literally) alongside Jessie J and a wardrobe-malfunctioning Nicki Minaj for their hit collaborated single “Bang Bang.” Leather was also a popular couples look for Adam Levine and fiancée Behati Prinsloo. But if we were to call out one couple that gave us major flashbacks, it was Katy Perry and rapper Riff Raff. Channelling Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears’ 2001 VMAs infamous denim look down to the tee, the “Dark Horse” singer, who picked up an award for the Best Female Video, matched her date for the night in a full custom Versace denim dress.

Since her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and the release of her new single “Shake It Off,” we’ve been counting down the days to see Taylor Swift work her “smooth” dance moves live on stage. It comes as no surprise that her performance was nothing but spectacular (with 1989 blazoned on stage!), but who would have known T-Swift would actually be wearing less than Miley on the red carpet? Arriving in a Mary Katrantzou long-sleeve body suit, our fave songstress showed off those infamous legs and added her signature red lip to complete the fun look.
