His show opened with the brilliant 30-year-old redhead Karen Elson, and Karl Lagerfeld’s fall collection swung between youthful, feminine ruffles, bows and frills at the neck and sleeves, and grown-up drop-waist, black-leather dresses. Colour is at a minimum this season; there are slight hints of baby pink and pale green, but black is the colour du jour. Instead, the focus is on classic Chanel details such as the camellia, the cropped and fitted open-front jacket and, of course, plenty of bouclé.
