Vancouver shops: November notes
Après-ski wear, French-girl chic, high-performance style and more.
Playing games
I missed the ticket lottery and wasn’t the first to ride the Canada Line, but I’m still ecstatic about the upcoming Winter Games. Plus, now that the 2010 Olympic Superstore has taken over the entire main floor of The Bay downtown (674 Granville St., 604-681-6211, vancouver2010.hbc.com), carrying replicas of the team’s apparel, I have even more ways to show my enthusiasm. Influenced by the work of Canadian graphic designers and logos of the 1960s and ’70s, the collection has a decidedly retro-cool vibe and includes iconic Canadian items such as the parka, toque and capote (buffalo plaid also factors heavily). My favourite piece is this hand-knit Cowichan-inspired sweater (shown, $350), which evokes the hunter/gatherer chic shown on the Marc by Marc Jacobs fall runway while allowing me to display my patriotic pride.

Funny enough, these aren't even made in Canada. You'd think that if Canada really wanted to represent ourselves we'd have it designed/manufactured here.

What a joke. An organization (the IOC) that so viciously defends its own copyrights has no problem dodging the Cowichan Tribe's copyright. No royalties at all. Instead they steal the design, make them overseas and keep the profits within The Bay and the IOC.
