Last night’s MTV Movie Awards was full of shirtless, star-studded surprises. It’s typically one of the most fun shows to watch if you’re into celebrity cameos (last night’s opener had a record 50), F-bombs and zygotes and last night was no different, offering a veritable poo poo platter of all of the above. Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton, Leslie Mann and Nicki Minaj brought the sexy while presenting the awards for best male lead to Josh Hucherson, Zac Efron lost his shirt and Jared Leto made another real talk acceptance speech. Johnny Depp was there too, showing up to preside over the event by presenting the award for best film to the Jennifer Lawrence-less cast of Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

On the red carpet, there were a variety of dressed up and casual looks, ranging from Rihanna’s head to toe lingerie look by Ulyana Sergeenko to Lupita Nyong’o’s kaleidoscopic Spring 2014 Chanel dress.

Today’s tour itinerary brought the royals to New Zealand’s South Island, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visiting the Blenheim War Memorial and stopping to greet the many local faces who lined up to meet them. Blue is one of Kate Middleton’s favourite colours to wear (just scroll through our complete gallery of her every look to see what we mean) and rightfully so: look how flattering that cornflower blue coat is! The piece is a custom design from Alexander McQueen, combining elements from two belted crepe coats available this season. The stunning colour, however, is all Kate—or perhaps was a suggestion from designer Sarah Burton, who clearly knows how to make the duchess shine. Read more »

A guide to Shailene Woodley’s style »

Move over KStew, there’s a new franchise face in town. If box office predictions are right: Shailene Woodley is about to become one of the biggest starts in Hollywood. As star of the upcoming Divergent, the 22-year-old actress is transitioning from a teen drama actress into a full-fledged A-lister. Known for her laid-back vibe and newly chopped hair, Woodley has been racking up red carpet marks in looks by Calvin Klein, Valentino and Jonathan Saunders.

For the past few months, Woodley’s been making the promotional rounds alongside studly co-star Theo James (a.k.a. Kemal Pamuk from season one of Downton Abbey). And while she describes her personal style as plain Jane, she favours relaxed statement making on the red carpet. Standout looks have included the bell-sleeved white Alexander McQueen dress and shoes worn at the Atlanta Divergent screening as well as the head-to-toe bodycon Jeremy Laing worn to the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards.

Over lunch today with the team from Chanel‘s Canadian press office, we couldn’t help rehashing the extravagant spectacle we’d just been lucky enough to witness from the front row. The full grocery store set up included fresh vegetable and cheese stands, along with aisles and aisles of canned goods, cleaning products, cupboard staples and bathroom essentials. More than 400 different products had been assembled and branded with the double Cs and Karl’s witty bon mots (only Chanel can get away with “sacs plus belle” garbage bags and 50% markup posters). This house in particular, has always led the pack with its devotion to creating a lasting impression through a full sensory experience. More and more designers are jumping on the bandwagon, hoping to have editors, buyers and shoppers create emotional attachments to their brands. In a week devoted to clothes, theatrics aren’t necessary, but a fun way to stand out from the pack and further promote your seasonal message. Here are this week’s top shows that pushed the envelope with memorable antics:

BAFTAs 2014: Our top 5 best dressed on the red carpet

BAFTAs 2014 Red Carpet

See our top 5 looks here »

While the rest of us were glued to the screens watching the Olympics and enjoying our long weekend, our friends across the pond were in a star-studded tizzy. The BAFTAs were held on Sunday night at the Royal Opera House in London and the place was lit up with major star-wattage.

Lupita Nyong’o, despite losing out Best Supporting Actress to an absent-Jennifer Lawrence, won the red carpet last night in a stunning Christian Dior Couture gown. The lively green colour was perfectly set off against her skin and gold accessories, and was topped with a flash of magenta lipstick. Despite last week’s more-than-unfortunate outfit, Uma Thurman proved she’s still got it in a breathtaking navy-blue Atelier Versace strapless column dress and diamond choker. With such a striking silhouette, there was no need to clutter it with accessories and frills—Uma is back in our good books with this one. Angelina Jolie hasn’t been on many red carpets of late, but when she turns up, you know it’s going to be good. Wearing a Saint Laurent tux and perfectly matched with hubby and nominee Brad Pit, Jolie looked every bit the bombshell she is with a seductively undone bowtie and wavy locks pushed to one side.

Kate Middleton wears Alexander McQueen, ignores the Queen’s request for longer hemlines

Remember those royal rumours from a few weeks ago, which claimed that Queen Elizabeth said there will be no more short hemlines for Kate Middleton? Well yesterday’s appearance seems to say otherwise. The Queen hosted a star-studded reception for the Dramatic Arts at Buckingham Palace and Kate’s hemline was at its usual knee-grazing length.

Of course, you could argue that the red Alexander McQueen dress has already been approved by Her Royal Highness: Kate debuted the bespoke piece in 2011 at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee river pageant. The longer hemlines request was also reportedly tied to the Cambridges’ upcoming tour of Australia, so a change could still be on the books. But we prefer to think this means that no wardrobe decrees were made at all—other than the one that allows Kate to borrow more statement jewellery pieces from the Queen’s expansive collection. Alexander McQueen casts Kate Moss as a futuristic urban warrior in its Spring 2014 ad campaign

In just her latest chameleon turn, model superstar Kate Moss is a futuristic urban warrior for Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2014 ad campaign images, which debuted online today. Part tribal goddess, part bondage queen, Moss looks totally fierce in a decidedly dystopian and unnatural setting shot on location in East London. Despite being a friend of the late designer, this is Moss’s first appearance in an Alexander McQueen ad, this time shot by long time McQueen collaborator Steven Klein.

In the ads, Moss’s Day-Glo cropped hair is gelled back for maximum impact, making her signature gaze all the more enchanting. Zipper-encrusted collars, pleated leather skirts and full feathered pieces show off the model’s svelte 40-year-old bod, while the gold arm cuffs highlight the vibrancy of her hair. Even the lookalike voodoo doll Moss shares the camera with is outfitted in replica miniature get ups.
