Last night’s MTV Movie Awards was full of shirtless, star-studded surprises. It’s typically one of the most fun shows to watch if you’re into celebrity cameos (last night’s opener had a record 50), F-bombs and zygotes and last night was no different, offering a veritable poo poo platter of all of the above. Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton, Leslie Mann and Nicki Minaj brought the sexy while presenting the awards for best male lead to Josh Hucherson, Zac Efron lost his shirt and Jared Leto made another real talk acceptance speech. Johnny Depp was there too, showing up to preside over the event by presenting the award for best film to the Jennifer Lawrence-less cast of Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

On the red carpet, there were a variety of dressed up and casual looks, ranging from Rihanna’s head to toe lingerie look by Ulyana Sergeenko to Lupita Nyong’o’s kaleidoscopic Spring 2014 Chanel dress.

With two Grammy awards, a breakout hit and an upcoming beauty collaboration under her belt, Lorde (born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor) has done more than most dream of at age seventeen. In a year packed with heavy-hitting pop stars returning to the scene, the singer became music’s unlikeliest queen bee, dethroning Miley Cyrus on the charts and sweeping awards season with her first single, “Royals.” With a distinctive love for anything black, Lorde’s style also stood out in looks by Balenciaga, Prada and Chanel.

What’s in your bag, Harley Viera-Newton? »

Last week, one of fashion’s coolest It girls took time out from spinning at Chanel, fronting a Gucci lookbook and collaborating with Dior Beauty to close Rudsak‘s 20th anniversary show during Toronto Fashion Week. A few hours before the show, we got to be ultimate creeps, rummaging inside her bag for daily go-tos. Amongst the items, we found the key to Viera-Newton’s signature look: long lasting beauty products. “Once I start DJing, I don’t really have time to touch up so whatever is on at the start has to stay on,” she said. Take note, working girls!

Your first time at any international fashion week will teach you a valuable lesson: You need a fur. And not just any Margot Tenenbaum style granny hand-me-down. A fur so intricately patterned, multi-layered and artificially coloured, that it has to be designer. Given its place at the apex of the top Fall 2014 trends, you’d think recessionary times were long gone—it’s virtually everywhere, from a hyper colour mink at Altuzarra to a fluffy red dress at Prada. Wear it with caution or as Dior prescribes, dangle it over your arm like it’s no big d. Let the fur fly, scruples or otherwise.

Quelle surprise! Dior gains Peter Philips, Chanel’s former makeup director

Peter Philips to Dior

Photography by Peter Stigter

Beauty editors’ polished mouths dropped to the floor this morning with the announcement of Dior’s new creative and image director. The reason behind this beauty world startle? It’s Peter Philips, the former creative director for Chanel cosmetics. From 2008 to 2013, Philips was responsible for some of the French powerhouse’s major beauty product innovations, including launching now-iconic nail polish shades (Particulière, Jade and Mimosa, to name a few) as well as Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour. And how can we forget the beauty feats he pulled off for Chanel’s runway shows? For Spring 2009, he tattooed models with pearls, chains and blossoms. In Fall 2012 he made us all reconsider our eyebrows with the debut of custom Chanel bejeweled brows, and the following year we were ready to break out the glitter after he lined the models’ eyes with elegant sequins. 3D printing, epigenetics and telomeres: 3 futuristic areas inspiring high-performance anti-aging skincare

Flexible glass is coming soon to curved cellphone displays. Suspension furniture held together by tension is eliminating the need for glue. And 3D printing is being used everywhere from the medical world—to recreate miniature human kidneys and livers in hopes of eventually using them in transplants—to the runway, where Dutch designer Iris van Herpen incorporated it into her couture collection last July.

The ways in which we’re now able to change a form’s shape are multiplying by the minute. Referring to the trend as “shape creation,” Loretta Miraglia, corporate senior vice-president of global brand product development and innovation at La Mer, says she believes it’s the third industrial revolution. “It’s going to influence almost every industry, including ours.” And it’s what inspired her to bring the concept to anti-aging skincare with The Lifting Contour Serum ($330, at Holt Renfrew). Paris Fashion Week came to a close for Fall 2014 yesterday with the last step strutted down the Hermès runway. With hotly anticipated designer debuts (for the record, Nicolas Ghesquiere knocked it out of the park at Louis Vuitton), celebrity-studded front rows (Rihanna made the rounds), splashy parties and a little luxe grocery shopping thrown in for good measure, it was a week filled with memorable moments. As FASHION‘s market editor, my eye is constantly scanning for the must-have items we’ll want to fill our closets with come fall. In that spirit, here is my Paris-inspired edit of the top 10 pieces to add to your shopping list when ushering in the next season.
