Interviews, Instaglams and more! The latest intel on Valentino’s groundbreaking virtual museum

Back in December 2011, fashion legend Valentino Garavani launched the first ever 3D fashion museum focusing on his five-decade couture and ready-to-wear career. Allowing anyone with internet connection to be immersed in the history of the design house with thousands of images of sketches, illustrations, advertising campaigns, editorials, fashion show videos and red carpet pictures, the site has now added an editorial slant.

Each month, the website will feature “Valentino’s Words,” personal, hand-written notes from the designer himself, as well as “Mr. Blasberg’s Questionnaire” in which society and fashion writer Derek Blasberg will invite Valentino muses, industry insiders and fashion icons to answer a series of personal questions about their insights on fashion and life in the fashion lane.

To kick it all off, Academy Award nominee Hugh Jackman is featured as Blasberg’s first interviewee. On a more visual level, Carlos Souza, longtime Valentino ambassador and fashion industry insider, takes viewers behind the scenes of the Valentino brand via his “Instaglams” (@ValentinoInstaglams), where he’ll be capturing the glamour of Valentino’s monthly happenings.

The sun finally showed itself for our final batch of street style from New York Fashion Week, allowing the kaleidoscopic effect created outside Fall 2013 to take hold. Be gone, grey skies!Swedish blogger Elin Kling embraced the cheery lighting with a long and lean white blazer, classic Ray-Ban wayfarers and slim jeans. Giovanna Battaglia brightened her day by pairing unexpected plum purple with brown fur. Anna Wintour debuted what is sure to be her new favourite Prada coat and it even seemed sunny and warm enough for Derek Blasberg to break out his adorable bike, which he rode to fashion week with nothing but a denim jacket to keep him warm. Most 51-year-olds would not attempt a minidress with side cut-outs, or at least they shouldn’t. But then most 51-year-olds are not Anna Dello Russo, fashion director at large for Vogue Nippon come street style megastar.

Fashion’s best-known dress-up enthusiast arrived at the Paradis Latin nightclub for the party celebrating her upcoming collaborative accessory collection with H&M, which launches on October 4, in fitting style: descending from the ceiling on a throne of giant fake pink roses, Marilyn Monroe style. Her aqua minidress radiated crystal and gold sunbursts, while golden alligators, which were affixed to her ADR for H&M sunglasses, spanned her brows. One of the best performers in the biz, Anna Dello Russo treated the crowd to a performance alongside fellow European editor and style star Giovanna Battaglia, who had accessorized to the nines in Anna Dello Russo’s H&M collection and even a butterfly-adorned golden headpiece.

They said/We said: Fairchild Fashion Media buys the blog platform which hosts Elin Kling’s, BryanBoy’s, Anna Dello Russo’s, Derek Blasberg’s and Rumi Neely’s blogs

Those still in doubt about the legitimacy of the blogging business may be whistling a new tune after hearing today’s news. Fairchild Fashion Media, a subdivision of Condé Nast that owns Women’s Wear Daily and (among other publications), just acquired the style-blog-driven media company Fashion Networks International.

FNI is best known for NowManifest, a curated blog platform that brings in 1.2 million unique visitors each month. The platform has a roster of A-list bloggers including Elin Kling, BryanBoy, Anna Dello Russo, Derek Blasberg and Rumi Neely (the site also hosts Industrie Magazine and Diesel).

Though there is still some resistance from traditional media purists who see bloggers as would-be journalists, the bloggers who make up the NowManifest clan are proving that blogging can mean big dollars and big exposure.

Perhaps the best example of a blogger-turned-brand is Elin Kling, who co-founded FNI along with business partner Christian Remröd. Kling has used Style by Kling, her personal style blog, as a launchpad for successful business ventures that most media personalities could only dream of.

Aside from running her blog and FNI, the lithe, blonde Swede also launched her magazine STYLEBY, collaborated with H&M on a well-received collection, designed the edgy minimalist label Nowhere and managed to squeeze in a big campaign for Net-a-Porter shot by none other than Patrick Demarchelier.

So what does this move by FFM mean for media as a whole? As says, online media is obviously coming into its own more and more each day, and companies such as FFM are wising up to bloggers’ ability to drive this influx of traffic.

“FNI . . . is a great example of a new media company that fundamentally ‘gets’ the Internet,” wrote Hayley Phelan. “No doubt it’s this expertise (and ability to drive traffic) that FFM, a media company with a more traditional background, wants to harness.”

Though FFM’s acquisition of FNI definitely marks a new day in media, BryanBoy and Rumi Neely of Fashiontoast have both recently revealed that they found out about the deal less than 24 hours before it was announced. It seems odd that BryanBoy, Neely et al were not consulted about the negotiations (especially since NowManifest’s success is largely thanks to the contributing bloggers’ involvement), but both stressed that their content would remain solely their own.

From the food aisles to Fifth Avenue: Inside Joe Fresh’s New York flagship store and opening party

Last Thursday, the unthinkable happened: A brand born in the aisles of the grocery store became part of the glorious gloss of New York’s Fifth Avenue. But if you know anything about Joe Fresh and its founder Joe Mimran, you know that well, it’s not really that unthinkable at all. Since launching the brand five years ago (and after years of style-propagation via his previous ventures, Club Monaco and Caban), Mimran has brought affordable chicness to the forefront of the Canadian fashion industry. South of the border was the natural next step, and since the brand’s U.S. launch late last summer, its bright and sunny hues have been infiltrating the pages of Teen Vogue, New York Magazine and the like. To boot, the brand has been making its mark on the arts community as well, sponsoring an event during Miami’s Art Basel, and the New Museum’s second triennial exhibit, The Ungovernables.

Party Pics: Derek Blasberg and Leigh Lezark go west for the Vancouver launch of Very Classy


Last Thursday, Vancouver’s classiest held court at The Room for a champagne toast to New York–based writer Derek Blasberg’s latest tome, Very Classy. The boy about town(s) touched down along with gal pal/DJ/model/Chanel ambassador Leigh Lezark (in Chanel, of course) for his first visit to the city—and just in time: it was the first sunny day the west coast had seen in a long time! (Score one for Van weather staying classy long enough to impress.)

After a January hibernation, guests, including our February issue It Girl Manjy Sidoo, seemed eager to dress up, and a long queue formed to shake hands, pose for Instagrams, and book sign. With his signature charm and newly slicked-back hair, the Blas was as Truman Capote 2.0 as ever (but with a nicer disposition… and better clothes).
