Mad Men Recap: Season 5 closes out with more affairs (and hints of future affairs!), more sixties-era psychosis and more punch-outs!

It’s the end of what’s been a season of fights and fat, suicide and stray gum, love affairs and LSD trips. Last week Lane ended it all, Sally got her period and Glen took a drive with Don. But this is the finale, and with the drama of Peggy leaving the agency and Lane’s suicide, what more can happen? Last season’s finale had a surprise engagement for Don and Megan, with Peggy saving SCDP from the brink with the Topaz pantyhose account—will this one give us the opposite, whatever that is?

Let’s see what the episode has in store »

Mad Men Recap: Making light of the fact that something TERRIBLE happened (and Sally got her period…)

In the antepenultimate episode of Mad Men, some game done got changed. Namely, Peggy made a power move and left SCDP for the greener (and by “greener” we are referring to money) pastures of CGC as their chief copywriter. Joan slept her way to a five per cent share of the agency (and let’s be honest, we’re sure her skills helped land them the Jaguar account), Pete showed what a schmuck he is (again), Lane brought up the bonus (again), and Megan struggled with an audition and Don’s lack of support. But we’re getting close to the end here, so let’s see whether Peggy’s move will be the big shake up or if there are bigger exits ahead…

Mad Men Recap: In which we talk all too much about Hare Krishna and Don and Joan’s chemistry

Last week we got another measured dose of Betty, but once again the Francis household is nowhere to be seen. Instead it’s back to a plate of SCDP and agency hard times. Last we saw Lane, his Jaguar buddy got caught with gum in his pants that led to boardroom fisticuffs with Pete. Don and Megan pop up for some bickering, but it’s not as bad as the underwear party clean-up and Howard Johnson gelato spat, and seems to stem from his dissatisfaction at work. Joan is finally hearing from Dr. Harris about the future of their marriage that she ended, just as her long-ago ex, Sterling Cooper’s smug copywriter Paul Kinsey, is popping back into Harry Crane’s life.

Mad Men Recap: Pete, Megan and Rory from Gilmore Girls all “just taste it!” Meanwhile, The Beatles’ Revolver has us thinking deep thoughts

Whenever they do the “last time on Mad Men” at the beginning of the episode I try to predict whom the episode will be about. This one hinted at another Pete-centric hour, and did not disappoint—he’s certainly taking the tailspin reigns from Don this season. Last week we only had a glimpse of Pete when he charmed Megan’s dad, otherwise we were treated to Roger charming his date Sally only to cheat on her (all too adultly and adulterously) with Megan’s mom, Megan and Don winning back Heinz and Abe and Peggy taking a leap of faith and living in sin. What sins will we see this week?

Mad Men Recap: All about Megan’s lush francophone mother, Peggy’s half-proposal and yet more terrifying experiences for Sally!

Last week was filled with bad times for couples, from Abe’s frustrations with workaholic Peggy to Don and Megan’s Howard Johnson row to the LSD-enhanced breakup of Roger and Jane. It was not a good day for love. This week, we finally get a peek at who created Megan: dad is a Marxist scholar while mom (played by Julia Ormand) is a glamorous lush. Just the kind of characters to put the fun in dysfunction…

Mad Men Recap: LSD parties, movie theatre encounters and how did Megan not get brain freeze from all that sorbet?

Last week, a little piece of gum caused some big problems but also gave us a chance to see Lane punch out Pete. This week, Canadian Semi Chellas wrote an episode (along with Matthew Weiner) that was paced so well it felt like the whole thing flew by in 10 minutes. In a break from convention, we separately joined Peggy, Roger and Don throughout the same 24-hour period. It may have been a real trip for one character, but everyone seemed to pick up some emotional baggage along the way. Here’s what we learned:

Mad Men Recap: The punch, the call girl and the boy named Handsome that turn Pete into a complete psycho

Last week’s episode was like playing a game of Mystery Date (our new retro game obsession, in which you never know who’s going to end up with who!). Don fought his libido incarnate in a fever dream, Joan reunited with and then kicked out Dr. Greg, and Sally eventually got high bonded with Grandma Pauline. We feel we’re in a good place with most of our characters, so who’s going to have a crisis this week? Read on…

After last week’s Jon Hamm-directed episode in which we had a health scare for Betty, a close call with the Stones for Harry and Don (one guess at which of those two we think has got the moves like Jagger), and the debut of a new copy writer who we’re sure would be fun at any Passover dinner, we’re ready to dig in to what Mad Men is best at: revealing its characters’ flaws.
